Skolkovo will help Kazakhstan to advance science.
The Eurasian Forum on Science Commercialization, held in Almaty, centered on critical challenges in funding scientific research and potential solutions. The event brought together representatives from academia and the business community. On October 10, participants from academic institutions reported that 44% of Kazakhstani scientists lack access to modern equipment essential for research, primarily due to insufficient funding. This has heightened the need for collaboration between science and business sectors. Experts advocate for stronger synergy between these fields to attract investment for new developments and commercialize existing technologies.
In an interview with Almaty TV, Sanat Zholdykhon, Chairman of the National Agency for Innovative Development, stated
“We are addressing the creation of high-tech industries in Kazakhstan. We have everything: land, resources, and the entire periodic table. Kazakhstan is well-positioned to build new high-value export chains and develop advanced industries, which will drive economic benefits and enhance our global competitiveness.”
Forum participants emphasized that CIS countries, including Kazakhstan, have significant potential for growth, supported by abundant natural resources, a young and educated workforce, and infrastructure conducive to innovation.
Kazakhstan is promoting innovation through various programs backed by local authorities, universities, and research institutes, with additional support from international organizations. Alexander Okunev, Deputy Vice-President for Regional Development and CIS Engagement at the Skolkovo Foundation, confirmed this, stating
“To participate in the Skolkovo project, companies must apply for project status, evaluated based on two criteria: innovation and commercial viability. If both align, the company can join. However, strong commercialization without scientific or innovative components doesn’t fit our model. We don’t take equity stakes or claim company assets.”
